My PHILOSOPHY/TEACHING METHOD
As my journey in music continued, I began to understand and appreciate that art is not merely a mystical occurrence or the product of inherently gifted individuals. Instead, I discovered that art can be learned, cultivated, and ultimately mastered. It is not an elusive concept reserved for a select few, but rather a skill that can be developed by anyone willing to put in the effort.
This realization led me to understand that true artistry is built upon a solid foundation. It is the result of diligent practice, disciplined study, and a deep understanding of the underlying principles and techniques. Like constructing a sturdy structure, art requires a strong base upon which to build and grow. By investing time and energy into acquiring the necessary knowledge, skills, and techniques, anyone can unlock their creative potential and achieve artistic excellence.
In my lessons, I focus on teaching several key aspects of piano playing:
In my lessons, I adapt these fundamental elements of piano playing to cater to each student's age, maturity, musicianship level, and personality. This allows me to provide tailored instruction that meets their individual needs. I foster a supportive environment that encourages growth and development, regardless of the student's level.
I teach beginners as young as 5 years old, intermediate to advanced students of any age, and teach mainly classical repertoires.
For young beginners, I use Tales of a Musical Journey written by Irina Gorin.
It is ideal for beginners to come to the lessons twice a week. I request parental involvement; attending the lessons together with her/his child so that she/he can help practice at home, especially the beginning phase.

In my lessons, I focus on teaching several key aspects of piano playing:
- Proper form and technique: I emphasize the importance of maintaining good posture, with relaxed and flexible arms and wrists. This helps prevent tension, which can result in a harsh sound and even lead to hand injuries.
- Key touch: I instruct students on utilizing the weight of the entire arm to press the keys, avoiding shallow or forceful key depressions. (Whole-arm action technique) This approach helps produce a beautiful and resonant sound. Beginners primarily start learning whole arm playing using only one finger; non-legato. This is the effective way of learning the sensation of involving your arms in pressing the key using bigger muscle.
- Note reading, music theory, and music history: I incorporate these elements into lessons to deepen students' understanding of the music they are playing. By delving into these areas, students gain a more comprehensive appreciation for the pieces they perform.
- Phrasing: I guide students in understanding and implementing phrasing techniques. By shaping and articulating musical phrases, students can create convincing and expressive performances.
- Deciphering and developing a mental image of a piece: I teach students how to approach a new piece of music, deciphering its structure and developing a mental image of how it should sound. This aids in interpretation and facilitates more nuanced performances.
- Finding balanced practice: I emphasize the importance of balancing technical exercises with expressive practice. By integrating technique and expression in their practice sessions, students can achieve a well-rounded and beautiful performance.
- Scales and arpeggios: I include exercises in scales and arpeggios as they are fundamental to developing technical proficiency on the piano. These exercises help improve finger dexterity and familiarity with various key signatures.
- Etudes (after approximately six months of serious practice): I introduce students to etudes, which are specifically designed to target and refine specific technical challenges. Etudes help students strengthen their skills and overcome technical obstacles.
